The Grind ā›ļø

The Grind.

I use AI every day. It's brilliant, and it's slowly turning my brain into soup.

This is me fighting back, with my brain exercise in public: every skill levelled from 1 to 99.

Today's quest

The question.

Public, so you can have a go in your head. Only one person can hand in the answer.

01 / Skills

The skill tree.

Seven skills, each from level 1 to 99. Good reviews give XP, and a skill I leave alone for two weeks gets flagged as rusty.

02 / Habits

Showing up, and knowing what I know.

Consistency matters less than honesty, so there's a second chart that checks whether my confidence matches reality.

03 / Log

Adventurer's log.

The last twelve. Green means I got it right, gold means partly, red means I missed it and learned something. Safe death, no items lost.

04 / The rules

The skill guide.

  1. A scenario every weekday. A small engineering decision: sync, retries, architecture trade-offs, KMP boundaries, or how Kotlin and Compose work inside.
  2. I answer from my head. Two or three lines, no AI, no lookups. Before I see anything I rate how sure I am, from 1 to 5.
  3. An AI reviews my reasoning, not just my conclusion, and the result is logged here as right, partly or missed.
  4. Wednesdays are no-AI days. Tickets by hand, then a lab where I predict, build, verify and break something from the inside. Every second week there's a design kata on paper.
  5. XP and levels: a decision is worth 10 XP, a lab or kata 30. Right earns full XP, partly 60%, missed 30%, because a miss I understand afterwards still teaches me something. Levels follow the RuneScape curve, so early ones fly by and level 99 in a skill takes 2,401 XP. Add all seven skills up for a total level, which unlocks titles.

Credit where it's due: the No-AI day is my Wednesday take on No AI Fridays, the weekly AI-free workday the htmx CEO mandated and put out to the world.

And if you have ever pasted an AI answer straight into a chat as if it were yours, nomeatproxy.com has a few words for you: "AI is a tool. You shouldn't be."

Only dates, topics, confidence ratings and results appear here. Nothing from work, ever.
